How to spend a weekend

Located 30 miles west of Downtown Los Angeles, the famed beach city of Malibu rests on a 21-mile strip along the stunning California coastline. “The Bu” to locals, Malibu is a favored destination for SoCal surfers and beachgoers, and the chosen home for the entertainment professionals and endless celebrities who prefer the ocean and lush mountain scapes to an urban LA habitat. Although there are endless lodging options for a long weekend or vacation stay, many Angelenos daytrip to Malibu to breath in the invigorating sea air and grab a much-needed break from the bustling city.

While Malibu is famous for its gorgeous, white sand beaches, note that many idyllic spots there are deemed private. These are therefore only accessible via the private oceanfront residences stationed on the cliffs, unfortunately. However, there are several popular public beaches just a short drive north of Malibu, where visitors can attain that ever-coveted, golden SoCal glow! Zuma Beach, for example, covers 1.8 miles of the shore and is a local favorite for excellent swimming and body surfing. In the colder months, sightseers are often lucky enough to catch pods of majestic grey whales breaching the water during their annual winter migration.

El Matador State Beach is one of the coastline’s most stunning. No trek to “The Bu” would be complete without posting your best sunset selfie against the impressive, dramatic rock formations located there! The Leo Carrillo State Park and Beach is a must for taking in a bit of the typically active local lifestyle that includes swimming, surfing, windsurfing and surf fishing. It also contains multiple coastal caves and reefs that are great for exploring. And, as an added bonus, the north part of this beach is canine-friendly so visitors can even bring their pooches along for a day in the surf and sun!

Don’t despair if the idea of “sand in your toes” isn’t your thing! Malibu generously offers its guests a wide spectrum of non-beach attractions and activities! Explore the 1,000-acre Saddlerock Ranch and Vineyard led by a private guide where you get to explore the vineyards of Saddlerock Ranch, organic gardens, Chumash Native American cave paintings and more. For a bit of art and culture, check out the historic, grandiose Getty Villa. Built by oil tycoon John Paul Getty, and opened in 1974, the museum and educational center houses a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities that date back to 6,500 BC. For nature lovers, Malibu Creek State Park boasts a whopping 8,000 acres full of fun family activities like fishing, hiking, bird watching, mountain biking, horseback riding and rock climbing. There is also an onsite camping ground for outdoor enthusiasts who have been longing for some communing with nature, tent-pitching, marshmallow-roasting and scary story sharing under the stars!

Malibu is an acclaimed destination not only for its stunning coastline but also for its incredible dining options. Located at the The Malibu Country Mart, Taverna Tony remains a beloved institution and is often considered one of the best Greek restaurants in Southern California. For those seeking a fine-dining experience, Geoffrey’s Malibu delivers excellence in gourmet fare, offering elegant dishes paired with incomparable Pacific Ocean views in an inviting atmosphere. Another must-visit is the iconic Nobu Malibu, perched on a low cliff with stunning panoramic ocean views. Dining at Nobu is as much about the impeccable cuisine as it is about the serene coastal ambiance.

A newer favorite in the Malibu dining scene is Lucky’s Malibu, an upscale steakhouse known for its classic yet relaxed vibe and exceptional steaks. Whether you’re craving a perfectly cooked ribeye or indulging in their seafood offerings, Lucky’s delivers a high-end experience that feels effortlessly luxurious. For something more casual but equally mouthwatering, Broad Street Oyster Co. is the go-to spot for lobster rolls that are out of this world. It’s the kind of place where you get a sense of the vibrant, laid-back Malibu lifestyle—grab your food, head outside, and savor the flavors of the coast with the sea breeze on your face.

And of course, there’s Malibu Farm Café, perched at the end of the Malibu Pier. With its farm-to-table focus, this breezy spot offers fresh, organic dishes in a setting that’s hard to beat. Whether you’re indulging in brunch or enjoying a sunset dinner, the casual yet elevated menu makes Malibu Farm a standout.

Tip: Advance reservations are essential for each of these venues, as they’re highly sought-after!
